Why Living in Newburyport is Perfect for Ski Lovers
I used to dread winter. Once the holidays were over, I’d start counting down the days until spring, settling into a kind of hibernation while waiting for the sun to return. Winter felt like something to endure rather than enjoy.
That shifted when we moved to Newburyport.
We came here fully expecting to fall in love with summers by the coast, but I never anticipated how much I’d come to appreciate winter as well. Living here makes skiing feel genuinely accessible. A day trip to a smaller mountain is easy, and even the larger New Hampshire or Vermont resorts are close enough for a true weekend escape without needing to take a Friday off or over-plan the trip.
Over time, skiing became part of our winter routine. And by being here, it doesn’t require months of planning or a major commitment. It can be as simple as checking the forecast, loading the car, and heading north for the day. That flexibility changed how winter feels altogether.
And it is not just about the accessibility to the mountains. Newburyport is a full-on ski community. It is easy to find someone to ski with, trade mountain recommendations, or pick up insider tips along the way. There is a shared appreciation for making the most of the season instead of waiting it out.
As much as I love summer here, there is something especially comforting about coming home from a day on the slopes, grabbing takeout, lighting a fire, and settling in. I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but winter might now be my favorite season.
